As the band's guitarist and vocalist,Kasumi Toyamashe has always been searching for something "sparkling and heart-pounding," like the "Star Beat" she heard while looking up at the starry sky as a child. This led to the formation of the band. They always use the basement of Arisa's family warehouse as their practice space; their skills still need improvement, and they lack experience. Besides Kasumi, the band members include the music-loving natural girlTae Hanazono, who hopes to change her negative personality,Rimi Ushigome, who is gentle and cares for her family,Saaya Yamabuki, and the contrary, insincere oneArisa Ichigaya. Due to the worry of being assigned to a different class alone,Ran, they formed the band so that the five of them could stay togetherHowever, for some reason, the five of them remained in the same class throughout their second and third years of high school. After entering high school, they simply enjoy the happiness brought by the band, practicing in the studio after school and participating in concerts. Led by Kokoro Tsurumaki, this is an eccentric girl band formed from the idea of "making the world smile!" The band consists of five members: the super optimistic and incredibly wealthyKokorois the core of the entire band; the beautiful and popular among girlsKaoru, the energetic and athleticHagumi, the kind-hearted girlKanon, and the calm and composed straight man of the band,Misaki. Because they often perform at places like kindergartens and pediatric clinics, they are very popular among children. They are characterized by flashy performances that no one could imagine and unconventional music.
The band name is spelled in kana, and song titles also tend to use kana for Japanese and loanwords. This also led the Simplified Chinese and Global servers of the mobile game to specifically create English logos for easier readability.

The five exclamation marks after "MyGO!!!!!" represent the five band members. Unlike previous bands, MyGO!!!!! is the first band lineup with a dual guitar configuration (excluding the vocalist).
The early slogan was "迷子でもいい、前へ進め。" (Even if lost, keep moving forward.) (In fact, it hasn't been completely abandoned), and after the 4th LIVE, it became the current slogan "迷子でもいい、迷子でも進め。" (Don't fear being lost, keep forging ahead even while lost.).

Compared to other virtual YouTuber projects, this project has a significant presence for the cast members themselves due to its cross-media integration. Live performances are conducted with the cast members appearing in person, and in solo concerts, they do not useincluding power-saving andvarious other means to block the face. However, prior to4th LIVE, content released on online platforms (including live streams, videos, photos, etc.) did not reveal full faces, mostly using masks, face covers, or hands for obstruction. Restrictions regarding appearance were lifted after the 4th LIVE.

Image Color:#EE5577There is still controversy regarding the interpretation of the band name "millsage": if split into "mill sage," it can be understood as "grinding wisdom," with "sage" extending from the meaning of wisdom to also mean saint or wise man. At the same time, "sage" also refers to healing and the sage plant; combined with the lyrics of the song "起死開戦," the band name can also be interpreted as "grinding herbs (to heal others)"—this interpretation also echoes the plant elements throughout the members' designs.
It should be noted that "sage" here is pronounced as the French "sage" rather than the English "sage." Additionally, the pronunciation might originate from "corsage" (a bouquet worn on formal occasions, not necessarily limited to chest decoration in modern contexts). However, it is worth noting that according to the etymology of "corsage," the word should be broken down into "cors/corps-age," so it cannot be directly assumed that the "sage" part of the band name comes from this word.
Furthermore, the small icon in the upper right corner of the band's wordmark, in addition to containing the five members' image colors, also features a color value of #FFFF99, an unidentified color whose specific meaning is currently unclear.[10]
One theory suggests that the surnames of the five members all come from Koto Ward, Tokyo. Due to historical and topographical reasons, Koto Ward is crisscrossed by water systems, which results in the band members' surnames all being related to water: Shio, Sawa, Hama, and Izumi. Among them, Kotohira is somewhat special, as Kotohira originates from the Indian water god Kumbhira.[11]
Regarding the band configuration, this band is the first in the project to adopt a keyboardist-vocalist format. However, due to the high technical requirements of their music genre, it is currently uncertain whether the band's voice actors will be able to perform live.[12]

One theory suggests that the surnames of the five members all come from Suginami Ward in the Josai region of Tokyo. The locations of Suga, Mahashi, Yagura, and Umezato are relatively concentrated, while Shinomiya is in an area further to the northwest and relatively distant.
Regarding the band's configuration, this band uses a dual-vocalist setup where both are guitar-vocalists, which is a first in the history of the BanG Dream! project. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the band's voice actors can perform live.[13]

Poppin'Party is the first band in the BanG Dream! project and is the project's "main group." The band was initially formed by vocalist and guitarist Aimi, keyboardist Itō Ayasa, and bassist Nishimoto Rimi, later joined by guitarist Ōtsuka Sae and drummer Ōhashi Ayaka, and officially formed in 2015. For a long time, Poppin'Party was the only band in the project capable of performing on a real stage, and most novels, manga, and anime works revolved around Poppin'Party's activities.
Roselia is the second band in the project, officially formed in 2016, and later in 2017'sBanG Dream! 3rd☆LIVE Sparklin' PARTY 2017!they made their first stage performance. The band was initially composed of vocalist Aiba Aina, guitarist Kudō Haruka, bassist Endō Yurika, drummer Sakuragawa Megu, and keyboardist Akesaka Satomi. In 2018, the band underwent two voice actor changes: the bassist was changed from Endō Yurika to Nakashima Yuki, and the keyboardist was changed from Akesaka Satomi to Shizaki Kanon.
RAISE A SUILEN was originally named THE THIRD(
Morfonica is the fourth real band in the project, first appearing in the mobile game on March 16, 2020, for the game's third anniversary. The band consists of vocalist Shindō Amane, guitarist Suguta Hina, bassist Nishio Yuka, drummer mika, and violinist Ayasa.
MyGO!!!!! is the fifth real band in the project, officially announced on April 29, 2022. Initially, the identities of its members were not disclosed, but later onMyGO!!!!! 4th LIVE「前へ進む音の中で」their true identities were announced, and the band consists of vocalist Hina Yomiya, two guitarists Rin Tateishi and Hina Aoki, bassist Mika Kohinata, and drummer Coco Hayashi.
Ave Mujica is the project's sixth real band, officially announced on February 4, 2023. Initially, the members' identities were not disclosed, but later, after the TV anime "BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!" ended, information regarding their true identities was officially released. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Rico Sasaki, guitarist Yuzuki Watase, bassist Mei Okada, drummer Akane Yonezawa, and keyboardist Kanon Takao.
Mugendai MewType is currently the project's only VTuber band, having begun activities in November 2023. Like the aforementioned real voice actor bands, the performers can play live, but they still operate under their VTuber personas rather than their own names. Compared to the previous two bands, although they do not intentionally hide their faces during live performances, in4th LIVEimages published on the internet previously, their faces were processed. The band members include vocalist Arale Nakamachi, two guitarists Nonoka Miyanaga and Ritsu Minezuki, keyboardist Miyako Fuji, and DJ and operator Yuno Sengoku, making it the only band currently without rhythm instruments.
Most voice actors for the three bands Afterglow, Pastel*Palettes, and Hello, Happy World! do not play instruments for live performances; usually, only the three band vocalists (Ayane Sakura, Ami Maeshima, and Miku Ito) appear to sing. Other band members generally do not participate in concerts, and there are very few stage events where all band members are gathered.
In the "BanG Dream!" series, several other bands have appeared, but most serve only as background characters or lack complete character designs and introductions. Among them are bands such asGlitter*Green、CHiSPA、CRYCHICand other bands whose songs have been implemented in the mobile game.

The term "BanG_Dream!" first appeared in the public eye as early as January 2015, when the manga series began serialization in the magazine "Monthly Bushiroad" titled "Star Beat", though the initial concept for the project dates back even further. In February 2014,AimiAtTHE IDOLM@STER's "THE IDOLM@STER M@STERS OF IDOL WORLD!!2014" concert[14], where she sang and played guitar as the character she played,Julia's famous songRyuseigun. After Takaaki Kidani received reports from staff describing the enthusiastic audience response at this performance, he sensed the commercial potential and began preparing a voice actor band project.[15]
On February 28, 2015,Aimiduring the encore of her solo concert "Aimi 2nd LIVE ~LOVE GENERATION~"[16]she announced that she would form a band to join the BanG_Dream! project and serve as the lead vocalist and guitarist, and hand-drawn flyers were distributed at the venue. This day is also officially recognized as "BanG Dream! Day." On April 18 of the same year, the 1st live (commonly referred to as the "Old 1st live") was held: "_BanG_Dream! 1st Live", it was announced that, during the previous Milky Holmes Sisters auditions,[17]having revealed extraordinary musical instrument skills,Rimi Nishimotowould serve as the bassist, and joining Hibiki at the same time as Aimi but with absolutely no instrument experience,Ito Ayasawould serve as the keyboardist. At the 2nd Live (Old 2nd Live) in June of the same year: "BanG_Dream! 2nd Live", it was announced thatSae Otsukawould serve as the lead guitarist. In October of the same year, at "BanG_Dream! 4th Live" (Old 4th Live), it was announced thatAyaka Ohashiwould serve as the drummer. Thus, the first voice actor band of the BanG Dream! project,Poppin'Party. At Milky Holmes Presents Bushiroad LIVE 2015, the five of them performed live for the first time and sang "Seikai wa Hitotsu! Janai!!》[18]。
On December 13, 2015, the official staff announced new character designs for the project, and the project name was changed from "BanG_Dream!" to "BanG Dream!" (replacing the underscore with a space), marking the end of the initial setting period and the formal start of the BanG Dream! project.
Since the project focuses on the voice actors themselves performing with real instruments, it differs from projects such asK-ON!and other projects where voice actors only perform as their characters. Bushiroad assigned professional instrument instructors to each member, and each voice actor spent a significant amount of time undergoing professional instrument training under immense pressure, a tradition that continues to this day. At theBanG Dream! 1st LIVE, the members of Poppin'Party were already able to deliver near-professional level band performances. In the early lives, to compensate for the lack of original songs, a segment featuring charming anime song covers was added, bringing a fresh experience to the fans.
The project relied on Milky Holmes' music teamElements Gardento create high-quality musical works as an initial foundation, while simultaneously launching an all-out promotional campaign. On July 7, 2016, the first season of the TV anime was announced; on August 27, they performed on the ASL stage for the first time; and on September 15, the mobile game was announced. On November 13, 2016, theBanG Dream! 2nd LIVE。
As Poppin'Party's operations stabilized, the project entered a new phase of expansion in terms of band scale and media coverage. Over four years, the project's bands expanded from one live-performing voice actor band to four live-performing voice actor bands plus three non-performing bands, while also making significant breakthroughs in anime, games, and other areas.
The second band in the BanG Dream! seriesRoseliaDebuted for the first time at TGS 2016, and in February 2017'sBanG Dream! 3rd LIVEappeared as a surprise guest. Roselia gained a massive amount of attention upon their appearance,1st Live's lottery application numbers far exceeded official expectations, leading to an additional performance being held one month after the show.
In December 2016, three other bandsPastel*Palettes、Hello, Happy World!、Afterglowwere announced. Unlike the first two bands, the voice actors for the latter three bands only provide voices for the characters and do not participate in the bands' live instrument performances.
In January 2017, the project's eponymous TV anime 《BanG Dream!》 began broadcasting, but due to rough animation quality and character portrayal issues, it failed to achieve the expected promotional effect. In March, the mobile music game 《BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!》 (hereafter referred to as Garupa) was officially released, and all five bands appeared in the game. The high-quality mobile game achieved great success, attracting 5 million players within a year and winning the Google Play 「BEST OF 2017」 "Most Attractive Award" and "User's Choice Award". Traditional Chinese, Korean, and English versions were also launched successively (the Simplified Chinese version had opened for pre-registration as early as 2017, but due to policy reasons, it did not officially launch until 2019). In May 2018, the number of players worldwide exceeded 10 million.
With the emergence of new bands and the launch of the mobile game, BanG Dream!'s activities and programs became more abundant, and the project's popularity continued to rise. In August 2017,BanG Dream! 4th LIVEwas held, and Poppin'Party performed at the Budokan for the first time, becoming the fastest female band in history to perform at the Budokan. In the same month, Roselia performed for the first time atAnisama 2017stage. By the end of this year, Poppin'Party, Roselia, and Afterglow all had their own group'sRadio Program, and at a frequency of about once a month, there was also the one hosted by Hello, Happy World! voice actors,Live Streaming。
In January 2018, atGarupa Live & Garuparty! in Tokyo, all 5 main bands appeared together. The backing band providing accompaniment for Pastel*Palettes, Hello, Happy World!, and Afterglow announced its formation asTHE THIRD (Kari)to perform as the 3rd real-life band, with temporary members being vocalistRaychell, drummerNatsume, keyboardistKurachi Reoand guitaristSae Otsuka. At their1st LIVE,Riko Koharareplaced Sae Otsuka as the guitarist;2nd live, the DJRisa Tsumugiofficially joined, and the band changed its nameRAISE A SUILEN, announcing its official formation.
At the same time, the boy band projectARGONAVIS from BanG Dream!was also launched during this period, and the first to appear on stage wereArgonavis's bassistSeiji Maeda, keyboardistShuta Morishimaand guitaristDaisuke Hyuga. At0-2nd LIVEand0-BEYOND LIVEIn which, vocalistMasahiro Itoand drummerShohei Hashimotojoined. Subsequently, ArgonavisBanG Dream! 7th LIVE Day2In which they performed at the Budokan as the opening act. As the project developed, "ARGONAVIS from BanG Dream!" was renamed to "from ARGONAVIS," becoming an independent project separate from "BanG Dream!".
The project's operation has not always been smooth. At the end of 2017, Roselia's bassistYurika Endoannounced her retirement from entertainment activities due to poor health, and atBanG Dream! 5th LIVE Day2, it was announced thatYuki Nakashimawould take over; later, keyboardistSatomi Akesakagraduated from Roselia due to sudden deafness. Because it was so sudden, the band even went through a period with only four members, until finally atRoselia Live "Vier", it was announced thatKanon Shizakiwas announced as the successor. After that,BanG Dream! 6th☆LIVE Day1: Brave New WorldDuring which, the new Roselia lineup, still in the process of gelling, appeared as a guest band at a RAISE A SUILEN solo live, while the latter announced their 2D debut and officially joined the Garupa world. This move marked the official arrival of the era of the six major bands.
After the Roselia members stabilized, the project's development accelerated once again. In January 2019,BanG Dream! 2nd Seasonaired, with all 6 bands appearing and the story timeline advancing to the second year. In the BanG Dream! 7th LIVE in February of the same year, the three real-life bands each held solo concerts at the Nippon Budokan, where Pastel*Palettes, Hello, Happy World!, and Afterglow appeared as usual during the RAS concert, playing the roles ofMoca Aoba'sMisawa Sachikaeven played the guitar live on stage. Subsequent concert activities followed one after another, with the largest including the joint live between Poppin'Party and the external girl band Silent Siren at the Seibu Dome,NO GIRL NO CRY, Roselia's solo concert at Fuji-Q HighlandFlamme/Wasserand the joint live between Roselia and RAS,Rausch und/and Craziness。
In March 2020, the new bandMorfonicawas officially revealed with the arrival of Garupa's 3rd anniversary, cutting in linejoined the Garupa family. After long efforts, RAISE A SUILEN also arrived in Garupa in June of the same year, marking the implementation of all "Seven Major BanG Dream! Bands" in Garupa. In October of the same year, Morfonica held their first solo performance.Morfonica 1st Live "Cantabile", becoming the fourth band in the BanG Dream! project to hold a solo live performance.
After entering the "Seven Major Bands" era, the BanG Dream! project did not smoothly welcome a second spring. From a macro perspective, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a decrease in the frequency and attendance of offline concerts, and the joint concert of the seven major bands originally scheduled for May 2020, "BanG Dream! Special☆LIVE Girls Band Party!" was also forced to be postponed multiple times. However, BanG Dream! also used outdoor venues and simultaneous online live streaming, starting with the8th LIVEas the first shot, becoming one of the earlier projects to resume offline concerts.
As for the project itself, first, the implementation of Morfonica caused some controversy, not only regarding Morfonica itself but also because some fans worried that the characters of the "three non-performing bands" would be marginalized. Secondly, Bushiroad invested a large amount of promotional resources into the new projectD4DJ, while BanG Dream! took a defensive stance, continuously releasing theatrical movies to recover. Thirdly, the impact brought by "Project Sekai: Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku" launched in September 2020. The characteristics of Garupa players being relatively young and having a relatively high proportion of female players became a disadvantage in the face of the more trendy, mixed-gender "Project SEKAI." Moreover, as works alsoCraft Egginvolved in development, the preparation for "Project SEKAI" indirectly led to a decline in the quality of Garupa's card art during the same period. In an environment of internal and external troubles, Garupa's revenue ranking dropped significantly.
Starting from 2022, asYuki Nemotogradually took over more project-related content and officially replacedTakaaki Kidanito become the project's general manager in March 2023, the BanG Dream! project underwent some new changes. This round of changes began with the "bands that synchronize 'reality' and 'virtual'"MyGO!!!!!appearing as the start. Unlike previous bands, MyGO!!!!!, which debuted on April 29, 2022, opened independent social media accounts (a first for the project), but only released brief settings and did not disclose the voice actors, using curtains to hide them during concerts. The masked band that began activities on February 4, 2023,Ave Mujicaas well as the band that began recruitment on July 22, 2022, and activities on November 9, 2023,Virtual YouTuberBandMugendai MewTypesimilar to MyGO!!!!!, both established separate social media accounts and deliberately hid some of the voice actors' identities in the early stages. In terms of music production, it was no longer handled solely byElements Gardenhandled solely,SUPA LOVE、Diggy-MO’、Shota Horieand other groups or individuals (even including the members of Mugendai MewType themselves) joined the project's music creation.
In terms of cross-media, on March 19, 2022, the project announced that it would createKasumi ToyamaandYukina MinatoProductionCeVIO AIvoice banks, marking the launch of the character voice bank projectYumeno Kessholaunch. On March 16, 2023, as Garupa celebrated its sixth anniversary, the story timeline advanced to the third year, which also meant the project welcomed its first batch of university student characters. At the same time, the art style underwent a renovation, and the iconic "gear eyes" disappeared. In the summer of the same year and early 2025, the TV anime "BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!》《BanG Dream! Ave Mujica" told stories from the perspective of new bands, attracting widespread attention. Online and offline activities for each band progressed steadily, with MyGO!!!!! and Ave Mujica basically possessing the ability to mobilize ten thousand people for concerts under the promotion of the anime. On April 26 and 27, 2025, theMyGO!!!!!×Ave Mujica Joint Live「わかれ道の、その先へ」even became the performance with the largest audience mobilization in the history of the BanG Dream! project. Meanwhile, Mugendai MewType, relying on online live streaming and high-intensity offline performances, managed to gain a stable group of paying viewers despite having almost no traditional media promotion.
A new round of content production brought growth in overseas markets, leading the BanG Dream! project to actively seek overseas development. In March 2024, the concert tourRAISE A SUILEN ASIA TOUR 2024was held in Taipei and Shanghai respectively, marking the first overseas solo concert in the project. Since then, bands like Roselia, MyGO!!!!!, and Poppin'Party have successively held overseas performances, among which the one held on February 15, 2025, at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center in ShanghaiRoselia "Stille Nacht, Rosen Nacht"reached a venue scale of ten thousand people for the Shanghai additional performance,MyGO!!!!!×Ave Mujica Joint Live Shanghai Additional Performanceeven achieved two days of full capacity at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. The willingness of overseas audiences to travel to Japan also continued to soar; according to a rough estimate at the 2024 Bushiroad Shareholders' Meeting, the number of overseas audience members at concert venues had reached 20%.[19]The BanG Dream! project responded actively to this, and besides inbilibiliestablishing a promotional account matrix almost identical to the local one, it also set up English and Spanish accounts specifically for the West and Latin America. Unfortunately, with the sharp deterioration of China-Japan relations at the end of 2025, the project's activities in China were impacted, and some activities were forced to stop.
As the project developed further, coordination issues appeared in content production. The aging "BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!" was no longer able to handle content updates for the three new bands after significant changes in the game production team. On January 12, 2026, Bushiroad announced the production of a new mobile game project, "BanG Dream! Our Notes", migrating the stories of MyGO!!!!!, which had already been implemented in the old mobile game, and Ave Mujica and Mugendai MewType, which had not yet been implemented, to the new game, while simultaneously adding two new bands—millsageandIchika Dumb Rock!. This move sparked significant controversy in many aspects, with audiences generally questioning whether Bushiroad has the capacity to manage the operation of two games simultaneously, and expressing concerns about band resource allocation, whether there will be cross-band interactions between the "Original Seven Bands" and the "New Five Bands" in future stories, as well as the inability to conduct offline activities in China under the current situation and the possibility of difficulties in launching the Simplified Chinese server for the new mobile game.
Under these new internal and external challenges, as the project enters its twelfth year, the future of each of the twelve bands remains unknown.

As of now, the story of "BanG Dream!" (specifically the GBP worldview) spans three years. In the game "BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!", this is represented by "Season 1", "Season 2", and "Season 3", starting withKasumi Toyamaentering Hanasakigawa Girls' High School and forming a band as the start of Season 1. The story seasons in the game update with specific major version updates, and the event stories during these periods can generally be placed chronologically within the season's timeline, though retcons occasionally occur (e.g.,MyGO!!!!!the formation time was in the summer of Season 3, making it seasonally impossible to participate in the flower viewing party in the 253rd event, which is also a Season 3 story).
From the correspondence between dates and days of the week in the anime, it can be inferred that the year corresponding to Season 1 is 2018Of course, there's no helping it if you insist on matching it with other more distant years, but this statement is limited to audience speculation.
