Trader
Once the player's Town Hall reaches level 6, the Trader will appear in the Home Village. Players can use current season event currency, Gems, and Raid Medals to purchase items (the Gem shop unlocks at TH8). Before the May 2022 Clan Capital update, the Trader's Daily Deals followed a fixed 39-day rotation cycle. After the update, the Trader's inventory refreshes weekly, selling all Magic Items except Hammers and Builder Star Jars; Gold, Elixir, Dark Elixir, and Ore; Clan House roofs, walls, floors, and decorations, as well as some Epic Hero Equipment (Clan House components and Epic Hero Equipment only appear when not already owned).
Game Progression
Currently the Home Village Town Hall has 17 levels[2]. From Town Hall level 1 to 17, new buildings are unlocked or more existing buildings become available as the level increases. Generally, TH9 is considered the dividing line; below TH9[3]is called low-level, TH9 to TH12 is mid-level, and TH13 to TH17 is high-level.
Low-Level (TH1 to TH8)
Low-level buildings cost little, take short construction times, unlock few troops and spells, and have small army camp capacity. This can be seen as an extension of the early-game tutorial. Typically within 45 days[4]one can reach mid-level, and in practice it takes much less. Theoretically, rushing to TH6 to participate in Clan Games can take as little as two days.
Below are the new buildings and their quantities for low-level (TH1 to TH8)

Mid-Level (TH9 to TH12)
Town Hall Level 9
TH9 to TH12 is the stage where game contentrapidly()unlocks.
TH9 unlocks the X-Bow, unlocks the Archer Queen who can be upgraded to level 30. This means the important "Queen Walk" attack system[5]becomes available. At the same time, TH9 unlocks the Lava Hound (commonly called Hound), and the game's strongest strategy "LavaLoon" also takes the stage — as the saying goes, each era has its god-tier strategy, but LavaLoon is the eternal king.
TH10 introduces the Inferno Tower, and also unlocks the Bowler (commonly called Blue Guy) and Bat Spell, forming two other important attack systems: the "GoBoWi" system[6]and the "Bat strategy." The addition of the Miner addresses the weaknesses of the pure Hog Rider strategy (called "mass Hogs") — slow cleanup, inability to independently handle defending Heroes and Clan Castle troops, and not attacking a Town Hall that hasn't been triggered into defense mode — giving birth to the "Miner-Hog" strategy. Furthermore, the corresponding Clan Castle at TH10 can request Siege Machines, which greatly changes the pace and approach of attacks.
TH11 introduces the Eagle Artillery, and the unlocking of some Super Troops makes Super Goblin and Super Barbarian the go-to troops for farming resources. The Grand Warden's addition gives strategies that previously couldn't face concentrated firepower head-on more options. The Invisibility Spell unlock enables Battle Blimp + Super Witch and Battle Blimp + Super Archer strategies. Meanwhile, the Electro Dragon (commonly called E-Drag) unlock makesthe most mindlessstrategy — E-Drag spam — a reliable tool for securing two stars and pushing for three in Clan Wars[7]. The Ice Golem fills the gap between the Giant's insufficient HP at mid-to-high levels and the Golem's excessive housing space. Super Goblins paired with the newly acquired Invisibility Spell serve as the farming method, while Electro Dragons serve as the fallback for securing two stars and pushing for three in Clan Wars — these two troops set the baseline and are fundamental to sustaining Clash of Clans gameplay.
TH12 unlocks all Super Troops. Super Witch, Super Bowler, and other Super Troops represent the birth of more strategies and systems. The Yeti, as an alternative to P.E.K.K.A, trades lower HP (a max-level Yeti has roughly half the HP and attack of a max-level P.E.K.K.A at the same TH) for less housing space, giving rise to "Yeti Avalanche" and other Yeti-based tank strategies. Battle Blimp with Yetis is commonly used for Town Hall sniping or clearing large defensive areas. The new Headhunter troop, a Hero-killing specialist, along with Super Minion (also unlocked at TH12), are extremely common in Clan War defensive Clan Castle compositions. TH12 also unlocks three Siege Machines, making attacks more flexible and varied.

High-Level (TH13 to TH16)
Town Hall Level 15
TH13 introduces the Scattershot, which poses a major threat to LavaLoon. At the same time, the Royal Champion's addition greatly strengthens the attacker — with the ability to only target defenses and jump over Walls, she can clear an entire side alone or advance with the main army to eliminate dangerous defenses first. Additionally, the Electro Owl's unlock strengthens "Dragon strategies," as it also only targets defenses and complements Dragon-based attacks.
TH14 introduces Pets, making attacks even more flexible and varied.Flame Flinger()'s addition provides more attack options, and the Titan's debut makes the attacking side even more powerful. However, the Builder's Hut can also be upgraded at this level, allowing Builders to assist in defense.
TH15 unlocks the Spell Tower and Monolith, greatly strengthening the defensive side. Of course, the four new Pets also expand the attacker's options.L.A.S.S.I's ability — "can jump over Walls" — is quite straightforward. Later, when four pets can ignore Walls, it became a passive ability.

Builder Base
On May 22, 2017, the Builder Base was released, unlocked when the Home Village Town Hall reaches level 4. Initially the maximum was BH5. In the rest of this section, the commonly used player term "Night Village" will replace "Builder Base." On June 18, 2019, BH9 was released for the Night Village along with the new O.T.T.O Hut building. Upon reaching BH5, the B.O.B robot is unlocked, allowing the Master Builder to travel to the Home Village and become the 6th Builder. However, the vast majority of players only play Builder Base for O.T.T.O.
O.T.T.O Unlock
After reaching Night Village BH9, you can spend 100,000 Gold (without Gold Pass) to build the O.T.T.O Hut. Building and upgrading the O.T.T.O Hut requires no time, but upgrades require completing tasks.
Upgrading to level 2 requires completing three Gear Up tasks, including the Cannon, Archer Tower, and Mortar. The required building levels and Gear Up times and costs are listed in the table below.

Clan Capital
The Clan Capital was released on May 2, 2022. It requires your Home Village Town Hall to reach level 6 and your Clan level to reach 2 to unlock.
The Clan Capital consists of multiple Districts. Capital Peak is the District located at the top of the Clan Capital. Each District has a District Hall, with the Capital Hall in Capital Peak. Their function is similar to the Home Village Town Hall. Each upgrade to the Capital Hall raises the level cap for other Districts and buildings. However, you must upgrade enough buildings in the Districts to meet the requirements for upgrading the Capital Hall to the next level. District Halls can be upgraded using Capital Gold. The District Hall level determines the level cap of buildings within that District. The higher the District Hall level, the higher the building level cap.
Rushing: Upgrading the Town Hall while defenses are at relatively low levels. Rushing does not necessarily mean low technology levels — there's a saying "rush the TH but not the tech."
Maxing: Upgrading defenses and technology to the highest or near-highest levels before upgrading the Town Hall.
Maxed defenses, maxed tech: Refers to building levels and Laboratory technology levels being upgraded to the maximum for the current Town Hall level, respectively.
Collectors: Gold Mines, Elixir Collectors, Dark Elixir Drills.
Wall grinding: Upgrading Walls, typically referring to upgrading high-level Walls.
Troop and Hero nicknames
Yellow hair: Barbarian
Fatty: Giant
Baby D: Baby Dragon
E-Drag, Thunder Dragon: Electro Dragon
Fly: Minion
Hog: Hog Rider
Valk: Valkyrie
Hound: Lava Hound
Blue guy: Bowler
Super X: Super Troops are generally nicknamed by adding "Super" to the first character of the corresponding nickname or original name
Black fatty, black balloon, black Valk: Refers to level 6+ Giants, Balloons[9]and level 5+ Valkyries, because at these levels these troops have a primarily black color scheme. (Relatively uncommon)
BK, Barb King: Barbarian King
AQ, Queen: Archer Queen
Warden: Grand Warden, nicknamed after its early appearance resemblingLi Yong(a Chinese TV host).
RC, Champion: Royal Champion, nicknamed after its resemblance toRuntu(a character from a Chinese textbook illustration of spearing a badger)
Catapult: Flame Flinger
Battle-related
Trophy pushing: Pushing up trophy count.
Trophy dropping: Intentionally losing battles to lower trophy count.
Three-star, zero-star: Achieving a three-star victory or failing to get even one star.
Fish: A player matched in battle; often prefixed with big (small) to describe how much of a single resource can be looted.
Dead fish: Refers to players who have quit or semi-quit the game. Usually their X-Bows, Inferno Towers, Eagle Artillery, and Scattershots are in deactivated state, making them easier to three-star. Their Gold Mines and Elixir Collectors are usually full, offering lots of lootable resources.
Fishing: Searching for opponents in Multiplayer mode.
Dipping: Attacking a Town Hall level higher than your own.
Buildings
Small bomb: Bomb
Big bomb: Giant Bomb
Red mine: Air Bomb
Black mine: Seeking Air Mine
X-Bow: X-Bow
Daddy tower, bug tower: Inferno Tower (named so because it used to be extremely powerful).
Little brother tower: Nickname for the nerfed Inferno Tower (mostly used by veteran players).
Single (tower), multi (tower): Refers to the Single Target and Multi-Target modes of the Inferno Tower.
Strategies
TH15 Zap-Quake reference chart from December 2022 (requires long-term updates)
Strategy names are typically formed by combining the first character of the main troops, such as Miner-Hog, GoBoWi, etc.
Royal Charge: Primarily uses the four Heroes as the main force, with other troops as support.
Barch, mass troops: Barch refers to Barbarians, Archers, and Goblins as the main force; commonly seen inmeme attacks, mini accounts, and bots.
All-in-one: A strategy composed of all troop types; commonly seen in meme attacks.
Spam, line drop: A common Dragon strategy where troops are quickly placed in a single line.
8848: A strategy primarily using 8 Earthquakes, 8 Super Witches, 8 Witches, and 4 Golems; sometimes also refers to similar compositions.
Zap-Quake: A strategy that uses Lightning Spells combined with Earthquake Spells' percentage damage to destroy key defensive buildings during the opening phase.
Blimp + Super Witch (Super Archer): A strategy that uses the Battle Blimp siege machine to deliver Super Witches or Super Archers into the core of the base during the opening phase, combined with Invisibility Spells and often Clone Spells and Rage Spells, to destroy central defenses.
Base Layouts
Town Hall outside (offset): Placing the Town Hall on the outside (edge) of the base layout. This was common before the Village Shield update, trading trophies for shields to protect resources. Now commonly seen in war bases at TH11 and below.
Box base: Using Walls to separate buildings in the layout one by one.
Funnel base: Using the layout to guide, maximizing trap effectiveness or splitting the attacker's forces to defeat them separately.
Island base: Surrounding Walls into several[10]large areas, like islands. The classic four-island base has existed since the TH9 era, and other TH levels also have four-island bases based on the TH9 original.
Fish head base: A layout with main defenses concentrated on one side, generally with the Town Hall offset.
Ring base: Arranging Walls in a pattern resembling the Chinese character "回" (concentric squares), with the Town Hall and key defenses in the center and the rest placed between the two layers of Walls, which can split the attacking forces.
Art base: Combining Walls and buildings into patterns, usually maps.
Letter base: Placing buildings around the perimeter and using Walls to form characters in the center; decorative purpose.
Tree farm base: Filling all available spaces so that naturally spawning obstacles can only appear in designated areas. Called tree farm bases because players usually want trees to grow.
Double (multi) bomb: A base design concept where two or more Giant Bombs or Bomb Towers are placed together, primarily to counter mass Hog and Miner-Hog strategies.
Split storages: A base design concept where resource storages are spread throughout the layout.
Tactics
Opening: Preparation before deploying the main army.
Luring: In Clan Wars or against active bases, using a small number of troops to lure the defender's Clan Castle troops out.
Drifting: Troops not following the intended path.
Cleanup: Clearing buildings on the sides during the opening phase to prevent troop drifting.[11]。
Town Hall sniping: Using a small number of troops (usually Super Goblins) to destroy an exposed or offset Town Hall.
Pop ability: Using a Hero's ability.
Focus fire: A single unit being targeted by many defenses simultaneously, taking so much burst damage that it cannot be healed, resulting in being instantly killed.
Main army: The primary attack force.
Clouding: Players with high trophies have difficulty finding opponents, resulting in long periods watching the opponent search screen, which features a cloud animation. (After the June 2019 update, Legend League players no longer experience clouds, but Titan League players still do)
Clan
Freeloader: Someone who only requests troops but never donates, or donates very little while requesting a lot.
Kicked: Beingasked to()out of the clan.
Direct request denied: Some clans require group screening before joining. If you apply directly in-game, you'll be rejected.
Mirror: The opposing clan member with the same number as you in Clan War.
Dipping: Attacking an opposing clan member with a higher number than you in Clan War.
Dropping: Attacking an opposing clan member with a lower number than you in Clan War.
Hitting up: Attacking an opponent with a higher Town Hall level than yours.
Hitting down: Attacking an opponent with a lower Town Hall level than yours.
Same TH: Same Town Hall level.
Opt in/out: Selecting whether to participate in Clan War in the player profile.[12]。
Attack Strategies
In Clash of Clans, there is no army composition or strategy that can three-star every base — only skill can handle the vast majority of bases. The following section introduces some strategies and systems that have remained classic through years of version changes.
Home Village Strategies
Queen Walk System
Objectives
Compress the base/cleanup the sides, ideally leaving the remaining buildings in a line to clearly define the main army's attack path; commonly L-shaped or I-shaped.
Destroy buildings that threaten subsequent main army troops, such as Air Defenses that counter air armies.
Destroy core defensive buildings such as Town Hall, Inferno Tower, Scattershot. (Not always necessary if the main army is strong enough)
Handle Clan Castle troops and defending Heroes. (Not always necessary if the main army can handle them)
Army Composition
Queen Walk, as the name suggests, uses the Archer Queen as the damage dealer with Healers keeping her alive. However, the healing from multiple Healers does not fully stack — the game has a healing reduction mechanic.

From the table above[13], it can be seen that when the number of Healers[14]reaches five or more, the healing efficiency drops rapidly. Generally, four Healers are considered sufficient for a Queen Walk, but typically five are used for safety.
Spell Usage
Rage Spell: When the Queen takes fire from multiple single-target defenses (such as X-Bows, Archer Towers, level 2+ Builder's Huts), her HP drops quickly. When the Queen's HP is visibly dropping, it's time to use a Rage Spell. Rage Spells greatly boost Healer healing output and the Queen's attack. Note that the Rage Spell should cover both the Queen and the Healers simultaneously. Sometimes when the Queen Walk is about to enter a high-firepower zone, or even needs to handle Clan Castle troops in a dense-fire area, a Rage Spell can be pre-placed. Note that sometimes you only need to cover the Queen — after she finishes nearby buildings and moves forward, the Healers will then enter the Rage zone. After all, the Queen's attack power under Rage is very high, and she'll quickly destroy buildings and walk out of range.
Jump Spell: After entering the base interior, the Jump Spell can guide the Queen Walk across inner Walls. Outer Walls are typically broken using Super Wall Breakers or n+1[15]Wall Breakers.
Invisibility Spell: When the Queen Walk drifts off course, cover the wrongly targeted building to redirect the Queen along the desired path. Inside the base, it can be placed on the Queen Walk to break defensive targeting locks and prevent the Queen Walk from dying.
Queen Walk Pathing
The Queen has a range of 5 tiles. Theoretically, the Queen "sees" the three nearest buildings and attacks the closest attackable one. When all three nearest targets are blocked by Walls and cannot be attacked, the Queen will attempt to break through the Wall.
To achieve the Queen Walk objectives, the player wants the Queen to follow a specific path, but outer buildings on the defending side can interfere with pathing. So other troops are used to clean up the sides. Common cleanup troops include Baby Dragons, Balloons, Wizards, or even the Barbarian King.
Healer Switch
When the Queen Walk finishes the opening and meets up with the main army, sometimes Healers need to switch from healing the Queen to healing the main army. Sometimes Healers switch automatically(lucky!), but most of the time the Queen's ability needs to be manually activated, rapidly restoring her HP so that the Healers switch healing targets.

Dragon Strategies
Dragons are unlocked at TH7, and Electro Dragons are unlocked at TH11.
The most common Dragon strategy is Dragon spam, which means deploying all Dragons in a straight line. This strategy is essentially the strongest at TH7 and TH8 (and has the lowest skill floor), and is virtually undefendable by same-level Town Halls. The skill floor is very low.
TH11 Electro Dragons can also use this approach.

Builder Base Strategies
At high trophy counts in Builder Base, such as 4000+ trophies, three-star victories are rare. So Builder Base strategies mainly aim to secure two stars with high destruction percentage, with Town Hall destruction as the minimum requirement.
Minion-Balloon Strategy
Army Composition
Three camps of Beta Minions (36 total at max level), three camps of Drop Ships (6 total at max level). Sometimes one camp of Drop Ships is replaced with Super P.E.K.K.A.
Primary Objectives
The Air Bombs Launcher and Lava Launcher both deal area damage to air troops. They can be sniped at range using Beta Minion's ability at the start, or the Battle Machine can be used to tank the damage. The Mega Tesla and Giant Cannon deal massive damage to the Battle Machine and need to be handled using Beta Minion's ability.
Strategy Approach
If the Air Bombs Launcher cannot be eliminated at the start, deploy Beta Minions in a line on the opposite side. Before the ability ends (max-level Beta Minions have ranged sniping for the first six attacks), deploy Drop Ships to tank for the Beta Minions.
When air troops are about to finish nearby Giant Cannons, deploy the Battle Machine into the base to tank for air troops, especially to draw Lava Launcher fire.
If there's a chance the Battle Machine may not be able to destroy the Builder Hall, save two or three Beta Minions for the final Town Hall sniping effort.

Special Playstyles
This section introduces some special playstyles in Clash of Clans.
Mini Accounts
Mini accounts are divided into narrow and broad definitions. Narrow definition: no defenses other than the Cannon forced during the tutorial. Broad definition: only upgrading troop technology for one's preferred strategies while leaving everything else unupgraded, lowering the war weight so the account matches against lower TH players. Before the June 2018 update, players didn't need to build all unlocked buildings to upgrade the Town Hall. In early versions, the Clan War matchmaking algorithm judged overall strength based on a base's defenses. This meant if your defenses were low, the system considered you weak.[16]
In Clan Wars, typically two or three mini accounts are included. Mini accounts have mid-to-high tech levels overall, and their owners tend to be more serious about Clan Wars. The typical Clan War approach is for lower-ranked members to attack first — if they miss, higher-ranked members can clean up. Mini accounts can challenge the opponent's top two, and also clean up lower bases. But if the opponent's lower-ranked members fail, they can't make up for it; if their higher-ranked members fail, they can't challenge the top two to further improve destruction rate, putting the opposing clan at an overall disadvantage.
Mini accounts are difficult to upgrade and will certainly be three-starred on defense. The attacker uses few troops and doesn't earn a shield,[17]making it hard to protect resources, which made automation scripts very popular among mini account players.
In September 2017, Supercell adjusted the Clan War matchmaking algorithm:
The system no longer judges strength based solely on defenses but also considers technology. If one side has mini accounts, the other side is likely to have them too.
Mini accounts' war weight was greatly increased — typically a TH11 mini would match against a normally developed TH10. But the opponent could certainly three-star the TH11 mini, while the TH11 mini might not be able to three-star the opponent.[18]。
Matchmaking became more balanced between both sides, and having mini accounts increased opponent search times.
Under these adjustments, mini accounts began to decline.
After the June 2018 update, players must build all buildings before upgrading the Town Hall,[19]and this update introduced TH12, meaning mini accounts could only ever remain at TH11. Subsequently, Supercell began cracking down on automation scripts, making the scripts essential for maintaining mini accounts unusable. The introduction of Clan War Leagues also diminished the relevance of war weight, and mini accounts gradually became history.
In the current version, since technology war weight is higher than defense, "defense minis" have emerged — defenses are at normal levels, but only one or two preferred strategies are upgraded in technology. Since mini accounts are far less popular than before and exist only in small circles with limited impact on the game ecosystem, Supercell has not taken action.

Permanent TH
Permanent TH players didn't start out intending to stay at one level. They mainly concentrate at TH9, with a small portion at strong TH levels like TH11. The first wave of permanent TH players likely appeared when TH11 was first released. Since TH10 introduced the Inferno Tower — an extremely powerful defensive building at the time — while the offense wasn't greatly strengthened, the attack-defense balance at TH10 was skewed compared to TH9, which had unlocked the Archer Queen and given birth to LavaLoon. Thus, many players congregated at TH9 rather than the then-maximum TH10. When TH11 was released, TH9 players realized they were far from reaching TH11, and rushing would likely provide a worse experience than staying at the very familiar TH9. So some players permanently stayed at TH9.
Currently, most permanent TH players are concentrated in war clans and frequently run Friendly Wars.
Mutual Feed Alliances and Anti-Feed Clans
Mutual feed alliances generally consist of a dozen or even hundreds of clans that mutually set their war bases to layouts that the opponent can certainly three-star, farming large amounts of resources through Clan Wars. Since mutual feed alliances always start wars with high member counts at the same time, they consistently match against each other. Anti-feed clans infiltrate mutual feed alliance communities outside the game to obtain match timing information and attempt to match against feed clans. Since anti-feed clans don't deliberately use easy-to-three-star layouts, they can consistently achieve higher star counts and resources.
Memes
One Star Ninety-Nine
Refers to a Clan War attack where the attacker ends upwith only the Town Hall remainingAs for why the phrasing "only and exactly" is used, think about why mathematics uses "if and only if" or "one and only one"without destroying it, resulting in only 1 victory star with 99% destruction — truly a tilting experience.
Players who cause this in Clan War and get kicked from their clan are all too common.
Warden Triggers Seeking Air Mine
Refers to deploying the Grand Warden in air mode and happening to trigger a Seeking Air Mine. The mine hitting the Grand Warden causes his "Eternal Tome" ability to activate automatically. Since the Grand Warden's Eternal Tome grants all nearby friendly troops immunity to all damage for several seconds, this mechanic is key to winning in Multiplayer and Clan War modes. "Warden triggers Seeking Air Mine" means the ability is essentially wasted, severely disrupting the player's attack rhythmand potentially leading to a zero-star result.。
Gem Debtor, "Deadbeat"
Refers to players who survived (weren't banned) theNegative Gems Incidentand have negative Gem counts.
Since many in-game items require Gems to purchase, if the Gem count is negative,a significant number of items including the Gold Pass and Hero skins cannot be purchased(even "free" items from the Trader cannot be claimed),[20]and any Gems from player top-ups are used first to "repay the debt." This mechanism closely resembles China's measures against "dishonest judgment debtors" (colloquially called "deadbeats") — the "consumption restriction order" used to deal with debts. Thus, these negative-Gem players are jokingly called "deadbeats."Sorry, you are a dishonest judgment debtor. Purchase of Gold Pass is prohibited.。
"College Upgrade"
The original meaning refers to college students taking the exam to upgrade from an associate's to a bachelor's degree. Here it refers torushingtaken to the extreme (even more so thanMini Accounts) — upgrading nothing except the Town Hall, leaving other buildings and troops at the lowest possible level. In plain terms, this is "exclusivelydedicated toupgradingthe TownHall," hence the name (a pun on the Chinese phrase for associate-to-bachelor degree upgrade).
Controversies and Incidents
Negative Gems Incident
Originated from a game bug discovered by a foreign player in April 2018.
An anonymous player, through an accidental operation in the Clash of Clans mobile store, discovered a remarkable exploit: if you topped up Gems in your village, quickly spent them, and then promptly requested a refund through the store, your Gem count would go negative — but the benefits from the Gems you already spent would remain in effect. This meant players could max out everything without spending a cent, though their Gem count might go extremely negative.
The root of this exploit lay in the regional publisher's store payment mechanism rather than a game data vulnerability. Since Clash of Clans has publishers worldwide, short-term damage control was clearly impossible. As more and more players exploited this loophole, even openly sharing tips in public chat, Supercell was ultimately forced to take action. Supercell issued the following conditions:
The Clash of Clans server split incident, known in the community as the 2/16 Incident, refers to the separation of the Chinese server on February 16, 2022.
Timeline
Around 10 PM Beijing time on February 15, 2022, Clash of Clans began maintenance. Players using Chinese IPs saw a 14-hour maintenance notice requiring a new client download, while players using foreign IPs did not see this notice.
Around 11:30 PM Beijing time on February 15, 2022, foreign accounts could log in, but Chinese accounts still could not. International players discovered that players from the China region in Champion League and above had disappeared from their clans, and Chinese player profiles could not be viewed.
Around noon on February 16, 2022, some Chinese players saw a "Your account has been banned" message when logging in, stating that the region no longer supports the current login method and a new login method must be created. With this news, the server split began spreading widely.
At 6 PM on February 16, 2022, maintenance ended and the Chinese server became independent. Apple re-listed a separate Clash of Clans in the China App Store; the international version could only be downloaded from other regions. Some content in the Chinese version was censored.
Censored Content
"X-Bow" (X-Bow) was renamed to "Cross-Bow" (X-Bow). (The international server's Simplified Chinese was also changed)
"Poison Spell" (毒药法术) was renamed to "Damage Potion Spell" (Poison Spell). (The international server's Simplified Chinese was also changed)
The Skeleton Spell was changed from red to green.
National flags and pirate flags were removed. (International server national flags were also later removed, but pirate flags were not)
Healer's chest area had fabric added.
"Revenge" (复仇) was renamed to "Counterattack" (反击). (The international server's Simplified Chinese was also changed)
"Pirate" was renamed to "Nautical."
Due to the lack of any official statement, February 16, 2022 was an extremely chaotic day in the Clash of Clans community, even trending on Weibo and Bilibili[citation needed]. After the split, a large number of Chinese players quit or started over on the international server.
Subsequent Impact
The international server did not transfer Chinese players below Champion League to the Chinese server, resulting in "ghost accounts." If a player had linked Apple's Game Center, they could use the international version's installation package with a VPN to log into their ghost account. Ghost accounts could not view their own profiles and could not be found by others. Bringing ghost accounts into Clan Wars would result in no match being found. Ghost accounts could be brought into CWL, but they could neither attack others nor be attacked. During maintenance on March 22, 2022, Supercell cleared ghost accounts, making them history. After that, there were no more successful cases of transferring from the Chinese server to the international server.
The separated Chinese server experienced many issues, some persisting to this day and some already fixed.
Issues persisting to this day
The Chinese Android client cannot copy base layout links.
The Chinese server has an extremely extensive word filter — even common words like "come," "go," and "Archer Queen" are censored. If a message contains a filtered word, the entire message is only visible to the sender.
Trophy buying on the Chinese server has resurged, with players reaching as high as 13,000 trophies.
The Chinese server has far more spam/advertising accounts than the international server.
The Chinese server lacks data APIs, rendering all related third-party query tools broken.
Issues that have been fixed
Chinese server players could not participate in the World Championship, forcing Chinese pro teams to disband and reorganize. (There is now a Chinese Championship, with the winning team eligible to participate in the World Championship)
The Chinese server went long periods without updates. (The Clan Capital and TH16 updates have since been released, but the Christmas update has not)
