Identification of Moe Attributes
According to the "Moe" standard meaning of the term, moe attributes refer to those in ACGN works'fictional characters'features that can generate sexual attraction. Due to the expansion of the meaning of "moe," it can also refer to various character traits that increase likability.
Moe attributes can be physical features (such asTwin Tails), or personality traits (such asTsundere), and so on. Theoretically, as long as a feature is "moe" in the eyes of some people, it is a "moe attribute" in their eyes.
Otaku culture researcher Hiroki Azuma believes that "moe" is a symbolic element. The feeling of "moe" for a character comes from specific, labeled features on them. However, we cannot simply quantify a character as a combination of several moe attributes, because theoretically, every character is unique and distinct from others. A character is a complex whole, and what makes a fan persist in following them is not just a single attribute name. However, perceiving and summarizing a character's moe attributes allows us to identify and understand the reasons why that character is perceived as moe.
On one hand, moe is always expressed through various specific features. But on the other hand, due to different aesthetic concepts, the determination of which features can be called "moe attributes" is not the same for everyone; for the same feature of the same character, some people find it moe, while others do not. That is,Moe content is objective, while the form is subjective。
Transformation of Moe Attributes
Of course, a character's external and internal moe attributes are not necessarily fixed; as the story progresses and the character's life changes, their moe attributes will also undergo transformations.
Furthermore, in addition to the character's own moe attributes changing within the work, different people may have different views on the same character's moe attributes, and may even interpret the character in a different way, performingderivative works, making the character into the way they like. This is also the reason why a character in fan works may exhibit attributes completely different from the original work.
