Pillar Men(Japanese:
《JoJo's Bizarre Adventure》A race appearing in Part 2, "Battle Tendency".
They are ancient highly intelligent beings who lived tens of thousands of years ago, worshipped by later primitive humans as gods or demons. Their physical state is similar to humans, but their physical fitness is extremely strong. They possess unique organ transformation abilities, super-regeneration abilities, combat abilities (Modes), and extremely high intelligence. They can eat and absorb vampires or organisms without Ripple into their bodies as nutrients. However, their weakness lies in being unable to touch sunlight (judging from their reaction to artificial UV lamps, they should fear the ultraviolet rays in sunlight) andRipple, and once in contact, they will petrify their own skin to prevent their body tissues from being further eroded by sunlight and Ripple.
The name "Pillar Men" is because the first member of the race to be discovered,Santanawas found inside a pillar, hence the name. In ancient times, this race was called the Clan of Darkness because they lived in darkness and were isolated from the world. (Currently, some people use "Pillar Men" to refer to the ones excavated from the pillars in "Battle Tendency"Santana、Esidisi、Wamuu、Karsfour individuals, while others use "Pillar Men" to refer to all members of the Clan of Darkness throughout history; opinions vary.) However, there are also females in this group; because the four members appearing in the work are all male, they are called Pillar Men.
Before the events of Part 2, the last activity of the Pillar Men was a battle with Ripple warriors 2,000 years ago. After that, they disappeared, and only recently saw the light of day again due to Stroheim's experiments.
Mode(Japanese:モード; English:Mode) is a unique fighting style of the modified and battle-hardened Pillar Men, specifically manifested as using deformed body structures to manipulate specific elements for attacks.
Among the four Pillar Men appearing in the story, three have their own Modes: Wamuu uses Wind Mode, Esidisi uses Flame Mode, and Kars uses Light Mode. Santana, due to a lack of combat experience and talent, has not yet mastered his own Mode.
Wedding Ring of Death(Japanese:死の
The Clan of Darkness before using the Stone Mask is presumed to have been an ordinary race with a limited lifespan, as they still attempted to reproduce according to survival instincts despite their small numbers. As Kars said, those who stand at the pinnacle of biological life do not need to reproduce; a single individual is sufficient. ———— This shows that even if they possessed long lifespans, they could not become truly immortal.
Kars was the one who questioned this. He believed that overcoming the sun was what the race truly needed, so he began working on creatingStone Mask, and attempted to overcome the sun and obtain immortality. However, this was rejected by his clansmen, who believed it went against the laws of nature—that all life must experience birth, aging, sickness, and death—and that an ultimate lifeform would instead destroy all living things on Earth, so they planned to execute Kars. Consequently, Kars and the one who supported him, Esidisi, slaughtered the entire village, except for two newborn infants, who would later become Wamuu and Santana.
After creating various Stone Masks, Kars discovered that their bone needles were insufficient to stimulate the brains of the Pillar Men, so he began searching for natural Red Stones of Aja—natural stones that could gather and reflect light as energy. However, the Red Stones of Aja found by Kars and his companions were either impure or too small to stimulate the brain; what they needed was a Super Aja, which could gather the maximum amount of energy.
Meanwhile, the Ripple warriors in Rome had already acquired the Super Aja and passed it down through generations to prevent it from being taken by the Pillar Men, while also ensuring it wasn't destroyed, as this red stone was also the key to defeating the Pillar Men.
2,000 years ago, the Pillar Men fought a great war against the Ripple warriors of Rome to seize the Super Aja, but were ultimately defeated. Having been severely weakened in this battle, the Pillar Men petrified their bodies and merged into a stone wall, not awakening until 2,000 years later.
Battle Tendencyis centered aroundthe Red Stone of Aja's struggle for possession as the main plot, introducing the battle between the Ripple warriors and the Pillar Men.
If a Pillar Man uses a Stone Mask embedded with the Super Aja to stimulate their brain, they can evolve into the Ultimate Lifeform. In addition to basic abilities like immortality and eternal youth, the Ultimate Lifeform possesses the abilities of all living creatures on Earth and can transform their body at will, with an IQ of 400, a grip strength of 900kg/cm², a jumping power of 18m, and possessesWing-like upper limbs, requires no sleep,SEX? NO NEEDetc., it is the bone-chilling peak of combat power in the JoJo universe. Although in most hot-blooded battle manga, power creep often causes characters from earlier parts toBOSSbecome as weak as fodder in the later stages, the strength of the Ultimate Lifeform remains one of the most terrifying sets of stats across Parts 1 to 9.
