Sentinel and Guideis one of the three major settings in Western fanfiction circles (ABO, Sentinel and Guide, Dom/Sub). The Sentinel and Guide setting originated fromUnited Statesthe 1990s TV series *The Sentinel*.The Sentinel and Guide setting may look high-end and sophisticated, but in essence, it is still about writing smut in a high-end and sophisticated way.
| Concept Name | Definition | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Sentinel/Dark Sentinel | A group of people with super-enhanced senses. In their daily lives, they uncontrollably perceive an excessive amount of complex and trivial information, which creates pressure, causing them to have large emotional fluctuations and making them prone to specific illnesses. Sentinels usually live in and are managed by structures called "Towers," where they are often surrounded by white noise to protect their sensitive senses. Dark Sentinels are the strongest branch of Sentinels. Their occurrence rate is extremely low, and they possess extreme self-control and do not experience emotional loss of control, so they do not require the assistance of a Guide. The cause of their formation remains unknown, but they are usually chosen leaders. |

| Guide/Dark Guide | A group of people with extraordinary empathetic abilities. They can calm a Sentinel's emotions, and feel and influence the emotions of others, while also being more easily affected by the emotions of others. A very small number of powerful Guides can use emotional resonance as a weapon to attack other Sentinels or Guides. Dark Guides are the strongest branch of Guides, possessing extremely strong purification and empathy abilities, and they are less susceptible to emotional influence than ordinary Guides. Their talent allows them to enter a Sentinel's mental landscape more easily, bypassing barriers to even modify, reconstruct, and control the Sentinel's spiritual world. |

| Physical Bonding | A Sentinel can only be with their bonded Guide, and vice versa. However, if one party dies, the other can choose to bond with a new partner. But widowhood is a very painful thing for both Sentinels and Guides, equivalent to splitting the soul, so most widowed Sentinels or Guides will no longer have the heart to look for a new partner; only a very few lucky ones can find another half that fits them again. Normally, a Sentinel who loses their Guide will become like a walking corpse and lose their value, whereas a Guide who loses their Sentinel is seen by superiors as having more secondary utility value. |
In contrast to physical bonding, there is also the concept of "mental bonding," but the latter is largely abandoned because it is mostly fragile. |
| Bonding Heat | The heat emitted by both bodies when a Sentinel and a Guide undergo physical bonding. | "gentlemen"...you guys should understandBonding...what it means |
| Guide Pheromones | Used for tracking and identifying Guides. Every Guide registered at the Tower leaves a sample of their Guide pheromones; no matter where a registered Guide flees, they can be identified as long as this sample exists. In eras when Guides had no human rights, some newly awakened Guides would avoid registering at the Tower. However, without anyone to teach them how to construct mental barriers, this was a high-risk behavior. |
Similar to pheromones in the ABO setting. Guide pheromones can also be used to temporarily stabilize a Sentinel's emotions. If there is a Sentinel who has lost emotional control, pin them down, and just give them a dose of Guide pheromones. |
| The Tower | An organization that manages and deploys Sentinels and Guides within a certain area; the administrators are usually elder Sentinels and Guides. Sentinels and Guides must go to the Tower to register after awakening. The Tower provides residences that offer perfect protection (soundproof rooms or communities far from crowds) and is responsible for their education. |
Ordinary people find it hard to adapt here. |
