Introduction
His father is Bright Noa, the commander of the Earth Federation Space Force's 13th Autonomous Fleet. During his youth, Hathaway experienced the Second Neo Zeon War (Char's Rebellion) initiated by Char Aznable. As a teenager, Hathaway, along with his mother and sister, witnesses a family conflict within the Paraya family while preparing to board a space shuttle. They are later told the flight is full, but Paraya, the Federation's Undersecretary of the General Staff, secretly gives the seat left by his departing wife to the Noa family to return a favor to a high-ranking official, allowing Hathaway to board alone. The shuttle is subsequently caught in Neo Zeon's colony drop attack on Lhasa and is rescued by the Nahel Argama, where Hathaway meets his father, Bright Noa, and his idol, Amuro Ray. After the Nahel Argama arrives at Londenion, Hathaway and Quess Paraya, who are of similar age, enjoy each other's company. While Amuro takes them for a drive, they unexpectedly encounter Char Aznable. Hathaway witnesses the struggle between the two and Quess's departure. During the Battle of Axis, Hathaway sorties in a Jegan without permission to pursue Quess. Although he finds Quess piloting the Alpha Azieru, Chan kills Quess while Hathaway is trying to persuade her.
