A second-year student at Kikyo Girls' High School with excellent grades, she worked hard to get into this prestigious school and is a beautiful girl gifted with both intelligence and talent. She has a cheerful personality and treats others with warmth and sincerity. She loves sweets and frequently visits the cake shop owned by Rintaro's family. 和栗薰子和保科昴自幼相识。当年幼的保科昴因为发色问题遭到男生排挤时，年幼的薰子夸赞了昴的银发并和昴一起玩，二人因此成为好友。
约升入高中时，薰子的母亲和栗枫子生病入院，忙于看护的薰子从医院回家路上注意到䌷家经营的蛋糕店，进店享用蛋糕时得到了一位金发男店员（即䌷凛太郎）的安慰，注意到了这位男店员并芳心暗许。其后一年内多次精心打扮来到这家蛋糕店想要制造邂逅，然而直到和老板娘混熟了也没能再次与这位店员说上话，而且二人相恋后薰子才知道原来凛太郎已经忘了这场初见。就在薰子几乎要放弃的某个雨夜......
薰子再次光顾了䌷家蛋糕店。在即将吃完蛋糕时，被安排看店的凛太郎终于再次和薰子搭了话，直接导致薰子呛到，仓皇逃离，并在数日后正式结识。之后一次意外中，薰子得知凛太郎就读于桔梗女高边上的千鸟高中，但并没有因此与凛太郎断绝往来，甚至来到千鸟高中校门口等待凛太郎，被桔梗的同学们拉回去了。当凛太郎需要为参加体育祭的资格复习备考时，薰子为凛太郎进行了补习并为凛太郎押了题，帮助凛太郎越过及格线。其后薰子被昴告知昴曾经要求凛太郎不要与薰子见面，薰子对此并不在意，并在之后帮助凛太郎与昴见面，让二人和解。当得知凛太郎和好友三人组夏泽朔、依田绚斗、宇佐美翔平因为暗中与薰子来往一事暴露而导致友情陷入僵局时，薰子和昴表示同意凛太郎将自己介绍给好友三人组，并在数日后正式与夏泽朔、依田绚斗、宇佐美翔平见面，几人成为了朋友。

During a date after the start of the second semester, Kaoruko appeared restless. Under Rintaro's questioning, Kaoruko requested that Rintaro call her by her first name. At that moment, several of Kaoruko's classmates—Suzuka Asakura, Madoka Yuhara, Chisa Minamoto, and Ayumi Sawatari—spotted them, and Kaoruko openly stated that she was dating Rintaro Tsumugi from Chidori. The day after their relationship was exposed, Kaoruko went to school only to find that her classmates still greeted her as usual; the ostracization she had anticipated did not happen. It wasn't until Subaru greeted her that Kaoruko realizedhaving already learned the details from Rintaro's phone call,Subaru had already spoken with several classmates, temporarily stabilizing the situation. Later, Kaoruko and Subaru discussed the topic with their four friends. Kaoruko told them how she had met Rintaro and the others, while Madoka Yuhara stated she didn't care about Kikyo's stereotypes regarding Chidori and expressed her trust in Kaoruko and Subaru. Subaru then suggested that the four of them meet the friends from Chidori, which they agreed to. Afterward, Kaoruko, Subaru, and the four from Chidori held a strategy meeting at an okonomiyaki restaurant. After the meeting adjourned, Kaoruko was shocked to learn that Rintaro intended to dye his hair back to black. Although Kaoruko did not want Rintaro to dye over his deeply meaningful blonde hair for her sake, Rintaro had already made up his mind to protect her, and the two embraced tightly in the park.
On the day of the group meeting, Ayumi Sawatari ran away because she had always relied on belittling Chidori students to maintain her self-satisfaction. Kaoruko found Ayumi after Rintaro did and listened to Ayumi's thoughts about her. Kaoruko expressed her gratitude to Ayumi for helping her make friends at Kikyo, and Subaru and the other friends gathered around to comfort Ayumi. Just as Ayumi was about to apologize for running away, both she and Kaoruko's stomachs let out cute growls of hunger. Consequently, the Chidori group and the Kikyo group went to eat yakiniku together. At the table, everyone listened as Saku Natsuzawa spoke about his past of parting ways with his close friend Reo Hidaka and enrolling in Chidori, which comforted Ayumi.

After the final exams of the second semester of their second year, Kaoruko, Subaru, Madoka Yuhara, and the four from Chidori held a celebration party at karaoke. During a break, Kaoruko and Rintaro told Madoka about their Christmas plans. With Madoka's promotion, everyone unanimously decided to help out at the Tsumugi family cake shop on Christmas. Afterward, Subaru turned the conversation toward the career path survey. On the way back, Kaoruko remarked that people who have plans for their future are impressive and stated she would support all of Rintaro's aspirations. On December 23rd, Rintaro discovered that Ayato's future plans didn't match what he had told his friends and consulted Kaoruko about it; Kaoruko comforted Rintaro with a hug. On Christmas Eve, Kaoruko, Subaru, Madoka Yuhara, as well as Natsuzawa, Usami, and Yoda, came to the Tsumugi cake shop, put on uniforms, and helped out. After work, they had a meal together and listened to the veteran employees talk about their views on employment. On Christmas Day, Kaoruko and Rintaro had a pleasant date. When taking a photo together, because Kaoruko's arms were a bit short, she had to hand the phone to Rintaro. On the way home afterward, Rintaro put a necklace on Kaoruko, and Kaoruko gave Rintaro a kiss. Everyone wore headbands. In the haunted house, Kaoruko, who was not good with horror elements, was startled by Rintaro and later screamed repeatedly from the scares. While having lunch with Subaru and Madoka Yuhara on the eve of Valentine's Day, Kaoruko learned that Subaru would be taking a mock exam for T University along with Natsuzawa, and she was happy that Subaru was able to close the distance with the boys. That evening, Kaoruko called Rintaro to tell him she would be preparing handmade chocolates for him, but she immediately became nervous. After Kikyo and Chidori finished their final exams, a despair-filled Kaoruko met Rintaro at the station. In the park, Kaoruko presented the best Valentine's chocolates she could make—two chocolate muffins—and received Rintaro's full praise, causing her whole body to relax instantly.
One day later, when Kaoruko learns that Rintaro plans to watch a movie alone, she immediately expresses her dissatisfaction and demands that Rintaro take her along—even though Rintaro is going to see a horror movie. While watching the movie, Kaoruko is so nervous that she eats half the popcorn before the film even starts, and she clings tightly to Rintaro during the movie, leaving him completely satisfied. Because the horror movie scared Kaoruko, Rintaro gives her the right to decide the location of their next date, and the dessert shop Kaoruko chooses happens to be the one that influenced Rintaro to dye his hair blond and wear earrings back then. During the date, the manager of the dessert shop, the chef who had influenced Rintaro, notices the look of frustration on Rintaro's face and greets the two of them. After they enjoy the cake, Kaoruko asks for some cake to take home, making time for the chef and Rintaro to chat. As White Day approaches, Rintaro brings a return-gift cake to the Waguri household, and Kaoruko enjoys the cake with her mother, her younger brother, and Rintaro. After the start of their third year of high school, Kaoruko was originally supposed to go flower viewing with her friends, but her mother suddenly fell ill. Kaoruko took her mother to the hospital, and her younger brother Kosuke informed Rintaro, who happened to call at that time, about the situation. Upon learning this, Rintaro and Subaru rushed to the hospital, where Rintaro met Kaoruko's father, Yosuke, for the first time. In the evening, Kaoruko, who had been feigning composure all day, was called out by Rintaro and lunged straight into his arms, knocking him down. Kaoruko had a good cry in Rintaro's arms, and Rintaro fulfilled his promise to Kosuke to be the person Kaoruko could confide her weaknesses to. After Kaoruko's mother was discharged from the hospital, to make up for Kaoruko's regret of not being able to go flower viewing with her friends, she invited Kaoruko's friends from Kikyo and Chidori to their home for a takoyaki party, and Kaoruko had a great time eating.
In June, after the Chidori sports festival, Kaoruko told Rintaro for the first time during a date about her goal of becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist and spoke about the conflict between her goal and her fears, receiving comfort from Rintaro. Later, Kaoruko told her family about her idea of studying medicine and received her parents' support, and the family warmly flipped through their family photo albums together. Afterward, Kaoruko shared this with her friends from Kikyo and Chidori. After the first semester final exams, Kaoruko, Rintaro, and their other friends went to the zoo and visited the beach where Rintaro had confessed to her once again. On the beach, Kaoruko and the other friends all heard Subaru say to Natsuzawa, "I feel very at ease because you are here." Afterward, Kaoruko reminded Subaru to recognize what kind of feelings she actually has for Natsuzawa, leaving Subaru tossing and turning. That night, Kaoruko and Madoka Yuzuhara talked on the phone about this matter. After the new term started, Kaoruko, who had submitted her career preference report to her teacher, was sought out by Subaru again to discuss the matter. Subaru stated that Natsuzawa's position in her heart was indeed different, but she didn't know if she could identify this emotion as love. Kaoruko pointed out that Subaru's expressions and words could easily cause Natsuzawa to misunderstand, making Subaru extremely shy.
On Kaoruko's eighteenth birthday, Rintaro visited Kaoruko with a cake again, but under the arrangement of Kaoruko's mother, he went to Kaoruko's room and presented her with a birthday gift. Kaoruko invited Rintaro to attend the summer festival together as a commemoration of their first anniversary of dating. Before parting, Kaoruko plucked up the courage to ask for a hug. On the day of the summer festival, Kaoruko and Rintaro went to a secret observation deck their classmates told them about to watch the fireworks. However, just as the two were about to kiss, Kaoruko's homeroom teacher, Ms. Toki, who extremely dislikes Chidori students, caught Rintaro and forcibly separated the two. She then sternly demanded that Kaoruko and Rintaro break off their relationship and threatened to have Kaoruko expelled, but Kaoruko refused to back down. While both sides were at a standoff in the principal's office, classmates who also knew the Chidori friends walked in and expressed that they were on Kaoruko's side. By the time Rintaro and the other three obtained the approval of the Kikyo principal and Ms. Toki, Kaoruko and her friends from Kikyo were already waiting in the park, and Kaoruko and Rintaro embraced tightly.
In the following days, Kaoruko and her friends were approached by Ms. Toki for a conversation, during which Ms. Toki apologized for her previous attitude toward them. Afterward, Kaoruko had a private conversation with Ms. Toki, who apologized to Kaoruko again for forcing her to withdraw from school. Kaoruko felt that Ms. Toki was being too harsh on herself and looked back on how Ms. Toki had cared for her in the past, stating that she had always liked Ms. Toki and asking her not to resign because of this incident. Later that night, Kaoruko missed Rintaro's visit because she was wearing headphones and only hurriedly caught up with Rintaro, who was already on his way back, after being reminded by her brother. Rintaro guessed that something had happened during Kaoruko's talk with Ms. Toki, and the two went to the park together. When Rintaro asked about it, Kaoruko couldn't help but shed tears. After she stopped crying, she informed Rintaro that Ms. Toki might resign because of this incident. The two thought of finding the female student who had been involved in the accident that led to Ms. Toki's hostility toward Chidori, and Kaoruko held Rintaro in a tight embrace.
